Are All Home Security Cameras the Same?

Definitely, all home security cameras are not the same. There are many types security cameras of all sizes, wireless and wired, shape, cost etc but no two are the same. Some are big and very obvious; others are tiny and may fit into a pen. But they all have one function- to capture images and video. The latest technology has endowed most home security cameras with great resolution and the images generated are superb.

For your personal home security, it is best to have a wired camera. These cameras are a deterrent to crime. The majority of wired cameras are difficult to set up and need professional help to install. Most wired security cameras are for outdoor use. The installation requires extensive wiring which is then connected to either a computer or a TV.

Many of the outdoor security cameras have a weatherproof covering and others also have infra red technology to look into the night. Yet others have a combination of motion sensors and color discriminating features. Some cameras sit on fixed ledge; others can be mounted on a mobile platform. All these features have been designed to catch the criminal.

Wired security cameras are varied in their quality and price. Some cost a few hundred and others can cost upward of a few thousand dollars.

The wireless cameras can be installed or placed anywhere and remain inconspicuous. The wireless devices are best suited for spying on someone or something. They are not good for long term surveillance; these small portable devices are battery operated and have a short life span because of the battery. Further, these wireless devices function on a signal to transit the image (just like a portable phone). If the signal is lost, so is the image.

Home security cameras should always be chosen based on where you want to install the camera (inside/outside), the distance that you need to monitor, the light conditions and how much you can afford.

Having installed a security camera is just the beginning. One also needs a recording device. The days of time lapsed VCR are gone. Today we have digital video recorders which provide 24 hour continuous imaging.

Buying security cameras and video recording systems has become as complex as buying a computer. Before you buy a home security camera, surf the internet, talk to people and above all discuss the issues with a professional.
